Automotive Lifts: Aftermarket Parts May Void Factory Warranties
Not unlike cars that are repaired in auto body shops everyday where use of imitation parts can void factory warranties, warranties on automotive lifts can suffer the same fate of cancellation when aftermarket parts are used for repairs instead of genuine original equipment manufacturer’s (OEM) parts.Â
Choosing the correct replacement part for an automotive lift is an important matter – a matter of proper fit, function, safety and performance. The best bet for getting it right the first time without compromising the integrity and reliability of the equipment is selecting parts that are built and/or endorsed by the original lift manufacturer and sold by its local factory-authorized distributor.
It may be difficult to tell the difference in the quality of replacement parts for automotive lifts by simply looking at them. But, just as they do in the flawed process of copying auto body panels for cars, counterfeiters reverse engineer lift parts, so they are  not likely to fit with precision. In addition, they oftentimes build them from inferior quality materials that may not reflect the latest design improvements and alterations the lift manufacturer made to enhance its products.
Advertisements for lift service parts are no less confusing. Despite the Stop Counterfeiting in Manufactured Goods Act that was signed into law by President Bush in 2006 that makes it illegal to misrepresent third-party built parts as genuine replacement parts, labels may still mislead many parts buyers. For example, an aftermarket part for a Rotary Lift may state that it is “Made for Rotary Lift Model XXX.” giving the impression that the Madison, Indiana-based company, Rotary Lift, has approved the product and sanctioned its sale when such is not the case.
With reliability of the equipment and safety of workers and cars to consider (not to mention the bottleneck caused by the downtime of having broken equipment), it is imperative to choose replacement parts wisely. Let’s face it. What’s the advantage in buying an automotive lift built to exacting ANSI standards only to have it cheapened and weakened by repairs using poor-fitting, unapproved aftermarket parts?Â
It is equally imperative to have the genuine parts installed by a qualified service professional who has been factory trained and certified. Failure to do so could result in termination of lift warranties as well.
